Cady discovers his strengths through Adult Skills Fund

When Cady Wall, 22, from Birmingham, joined the Adult Skills Fund in March 2025, he was unsure of his future and lacked the confidence to take the next step. Struggling with self-doubt and anxiety in social situations, Cady found it difficult to recognise the value he could bring to an employer.

During his initial meeting with his Tutor, Samantha Walsh, she quickly recognised that Cady had strong transferable skills but just needed the right environment and encouragement to help him realise his potential. Through a combination of one-to-one sessions, regular feedback, and learner-led activities, Cady began to find his feet and open up.

With a desire to work in the hospitality sector, Cady completed essential training in COSHH, food hygiene and health and safety to give him the fundamentals for a career in hospitality. He also completed practical sessions including barista training, mocktail masterclass and general housekeeping, which helped to build his confidence in a supportive setting.

Samantha reflected: “When Cady first came to Maximus, he was shy, withdrawn and burdened with self-doubt. But over time, he began to smile more, speak up and even support other learners in the group.”

A turning point came when Cady volunteered to help arrange a VE Day celebration being held at our Birmingham office, showing how much his confidence had grown. He happily discovered that his ideas matter, that people listened and he could lead.

Reflecting on his experience, Cady shared: “At first, it was daunting. The new faces, unfamiliar environment and the fear of failure, but the structure of the classes and the support from my tutor has really helped me come out of my shell. I’ve learned that I do have something important to offer.”

Cady’s goal is to work in hospitality, interacting with the public and putting his new skills to use. While he’s not yet in a job, he now feels ready to take that next step.

Samantha added: “Cady has grown so much. His transformation has been nothing short of incredible, and I feel confident he has a bright future ahead of him.”
