Elizabeth, from Walthamstow, had studied IT and Business Administration, and worked in a clerical role at a hospital after leaving school, but from the age of nineteen had stayed at home to raise her three children.
Twenty years later, Elizabeth, 39, felt in need of a new challenge, and was keen to return to employment. However, she was lacking in confidence, and initially joined the Restart Scheme to improve her prospects.
During regular appointments with her Employment Advisor, Elizabeth’s confidence steadily improved, and with her work coach’s encouragement, she enrolled onto an online Customer Service & Employability course. After successfully completing the course, she felt ready to progress to a vocational qualification.
Through the Maximus Adult Education Budget, Elizabeth was supported to undertake a Digital Skills Course, which she enjoyed and successfully completed.
Following a work experience placement at the Leytonstone branch of Maximus, she was offered an apprenticeship there as an Administrative Co-ordinator. Beginning the apprenticeship in January 2023, she is now working towards an NVQ in Business Administration and will continue in her role after this is completed.
Talking about her experience, Elizabeth said: “Working at Maximus has given me confidence and the motivation to do well in my new career. I’m really enjoying my job – everyone in my office has been so welcoming and supportive and encouraging. Although I still have a lot to learn, I’m confident I will get there.
“I’m now focused on passing my Apprenticeship and continuing to progress in my role at the Leytonstone office. I also hope to complete some additional courses to see where this job can take me.”
AEB Operations Manager, Paul Riddick, said: “During her work experience period at our Leytonstone Office, Liz showed that she was keen to learn new skills and also to help others.
“When an apprentice vacancy arose I was sure that Liz would make a great member of the team and she proved me right during her first month at work. She is making a positive difference to our learners’ lives and I look forward to seeing her go from strength to strength over the period of her apprenticeship.”
